The Program

The Development Instructor (DI) program is a unique chance to study and work with people from all over the world. You will get the chance to travel and learn about different cultures and to help those who are less fortunate. In Denmark you will help children and young adults who have had a difficult start in their lives and may have special needs, and in Africa you will be able to contribute to the fight against poverty and diseases.

The Program:

The program is 24 months long and target people from all over the world between 18 and 100 years of age:
• 12 months in Denmark at one of our school centers
• 12 months in Africa at one of Humana People to People's projects

In Denmark:
The main purposes of the 12 months program is to give Development Instructors the experience and practical tools to be proactive, creative participants and guides in Development both for children/young people in Denmark, and at the project in Africa.

Theoretical studies:
Part of the program is focussed upon personal studies. There is a database system full of tasks wherein you can guide your study and will have to complete a certain amount of study tasks. These are centred around studying Danish society and culture, creative tasks such as creating poetry and song books, gardening and the environment, poverty and disease, personal health and development to name but a few.

Practical studies and work:
The practical studies and work are carried out at the school of accommodation and consist of various tasks such as: teaching, social work, maintenance and office work, but also cleaning, cooking and dishwashing. Basically the DI will be taking part of running the school in all of its aspects together with the staff at the school. The DIs will also take part in organizing cultural, musical and sports events, working with maintenance at building weekends and organising theatrical events.

In Africa:
In the 12 months period as a Development Instructor at a Humana People to People project in Africa, the DI will have the possibility to work with people in the poorest part of the world. You will choose a specific project and will specialize your preparation towards this during the last six months of your stay in Denmark. In Africa you work closely together with the project leader and is expected to take your part of the responsibility for a successful running of the project. Projects included are: teachers training college, farmers club, child aid, HIV and AIDS epidemic control, second hand clothes and shoes selling.

Economy:
You will be hired as a volunteer at Juelsminde with a small allowance. This will cover pocket money as well as all expenses related to the program. During the time at the Humana People to People project in Africa you will receive food, accommodation and pocket money.
